This book provides an introduction to traffic engineering. The emphasis will be placed on fundamental concepts and principles of traffic operations, procedures and methods of traffic engineering studies, and analytical and computational skills of transportation system analysis and control.It is hoped that this book will be useful to the senior undergraduate students and graduate students, and to those in traffic and transportation profession who need to solve problems on the analysis, design, plan, operation, control and management of traffic system.

Wang Wuhong, Ph.D., professor andAlexander von Humboldt Research Fellow; Ph.D. (1996), Southwest Jiaotong University, and afterwards post-doctor research in Beihang University, and associate profess or and professor of Beijing Institute of Technology since 1999. He also worked on cooperative research in the University of Tokyo as JSPS special research-fellow during 2002~2004 and as visiting professor in 2005. During 2005~2007, he worked as Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow inTechnischeUniversitaetMünchen. He has successively taken on and charge of more than 10 scientific research projects, including 4 supported by National Natural Science Foundation, 3 supported by MOE Scientific Research Foundation and 4 international cooperative project. As the first author, he has published 2 monographs of science, 1 English monograph, 1 translated book and 1 teaching book in Chinese and English, respectively. As the first author, he has also published 12 SCI papers and 21 EI papers.
